The Battle of Kettle Creek is thought to be one of the most
important and brutal battles of the Revolutionary war for this was one of the few patriot victories. On the morning of
February 14,1779 , James Boyd, a British Lieutenant, took seven hundred
British loyalists and set up a camp site by Kettle Creek. He and his men were
prepared and were ready for any attacks that would be set upon them. Things
didn't go as planned for Boyd and his men. In being aware of the possible attack,
Boyd sent some of his men in search for food. While in search they were met by
Elijah Clark . Elijah clark and his men attacked and in total the patriots had three
hundred forty men while Boyd's army nearly doubled the Americans army the
Americans didn't give up without a fight. Clark 's army fought in three columns,
Col. Dooly on the right, Pickens in the middle, andElijah Clark. , on
the left. As Pickens realized the British sentries he called for an open fire.
Boyd's army was alarmed by the gunshot so they advanced up a nearby hill . After proceeding up the hill the boyd and his men began opening fire on the patriots. The Patriots had been losing when Boyd and his men returned to the campsite Boyd falls to the ground, he had been wounded. As Boyd's men panick because of this they try to fight back. When they realize they were surrounded they retreated in defeat. Many were captured by clark and his men others fled to North carolina.
